Most drywall calls fall into a handful of kinds of damage:

Why some patches show
A patch shows for one of two reasons: the texture does not match the wall around it, or it was not primed. Bare joint compound absorbs paint differently from a painted wall and dries to a different sheen. The fix is to match the texture, prime the repair, and paint the whole wall rather than just the spot.
Fix the leak first
A water stain will come straight back through new paint if the source is still wet. Make sure the leak is repaired and the area has dried out. Stained areas then need a stain-blocking primer before they are painted.
